Botox Battles Your Headaches

Wrinkles can provide us with quite the headache. Figuratively speaking, of course. In many cases, people get frustrated with seeing facial lines when they look into their mirrors each day. It is likely that, by now, you have heard of the wonders of Botox injections and how they help to smoothen out those age-revealing wrinkles. But did you know that Botox can help with headaches too? Literally speaking!

That’s right. Botox is not just for wrinkle treatment alone. The well-known muscle relaxer can also help people who suffer from severe headaches and migraines. Dr. Rose Giammarco is a Neurologist who specializes in headaches. On the Help For Headaches website, she comments about the use of Botox to relieve the pain associated with this medical issue.

“The principle behind its use in this case is to relax tense or spastic muscles by blocking Acetylcholine release which stimulates muscle contraction,” writes Dr. Giammarco, “The discovery of Botox for treatment of migraine was quite by accident. Several patients who were using Botox for injection of wrinkles also happened to have migraine. They reported improvement in their headaches following injection of Botox to their brow and forehead muscles.”

The doctor admits that the exact “mechanism of action is not entirely clear”. But it stands to reason that because Botox works to decrease muscle contraction that may trigger migraine headaches, it is an ideal solution to the problem. Like most treatments, its effectiveness may vary from patient to patient. Dr. Giammarco remarks that Botox is often used as a resort when other solutions to migraine pain fails.

The Botox website, in fact, acknowledges that treatments are generally reserved for those who have Chronic Migraines. The difference, as the site points out, is that chronic migraines are headaches that generally last more than four hours and occur fifteen or more times a month. A standard migraine headache may begin as a dull pain, then turn into a throbbing pain that can worsen with physical activity.

She also acknowledges that some people may have reservations about having Botox injections administered for any reason. Naturally, safety is always a concern. And this is why an experienced and licensed doctor should be considered absolutely mandatory for those who wish to seek treatment. This is true whether you are interested in “de-wrinkling” or getting rid of headaches.

“Botox’ record since 1989 is excellent,” reports Dr. Giammarco, “There is no systemic absorption as there is with oral medication, therefore no systemic side effects are seen.” Perhaps, the safety record of Botox is best explained by the sheer number of people who receive injections each and every year without problems. It averages out to be significantly over 3 million people!

Botox, as you may have guessed, only continues to grow in popularity. For wrinkles, excessive sweating and yes – headaches, Botox injections are helping people return to states of normalcy they may have thought was well behind them. It just may be the solution for you too. For more information on Botox, contact The Aurora Medical Laser & Vein Centre at 403-358-5818.

Thermage Takes You Back In Time

Do you know what you have in common with every single other person in the world? You age. Sorry to tell you, but there’s nothing you can do about it. In fact, we all should probably look at the very act of aging as a gift. Of course, the more you age, the longer you live. And wouldn’t we all like to live long, happy and healthy lives? Sure we would.

The thing is, most of us would probably love to live these long, happy and healthy lives without the signs of aging. But speaking of things that we can’t do anything about, facial lines and wrinkles are bound to make appearances at some point. And for the most part, these signs of aging affect how we feel about ourselves.

Most of us can’t help but take that extra look in the mirror each morning using our fingers to stretch out that skin around our eyes to make it look smoother. We’d all love to look the way we did when we were in our twenties. But there’s got to be a much more effective method than the old personal skin-pull. That’s why so many of us spend so much money on store-bought lotions and moisturizers.

Every product on the shelf seems to promise us something new and exciting that the other products cannot. And with each promise comes a more expensive price. How long must we use these products without getting the results we truly want? Trying to recapture the look of our youth shouldn’t have to be so painstaking and costly. Well, guess what. It isn’t!

Have you ever heard of Thermage? It’s a non-invasive radiofrequency-based therapy that works to improve the appearance of loose and wrinkled skin to give you a smoother and younger look and feel! This treatment has been known to work wonders in reversing the signs of aging on many different parts of the body. And, in many cases, results are apparent in just one treatment.

Eyes. Most people regard their eyes as the area of the face that is most telling about one’s age. When one has crow’s feet or simply has that dreary, tired look, it can indicate that one is up in age…or at least, looks it. Thermage has been used to treat the upper and lower eyelids to provide patients with a much more youthful and rested look by addressing such issues as hooding and fine lines.

Face. We’ve all heard of the trem “turkey neck”. It’s not exactly a kind way to comment upon the loose skin around the jawline that comes with age. Thermage treatments work to remodel collagen and smoothen out lines and wrinkles as well. This not only reverses the signs of aging that appear on our faces, but encourages the overall health of our skin.

Body. Naturally, our faces aren’t the only places where aging is apparent. We each have different parts of our bodies where there is sagging skin, unwanted bulges and dimples. Thermage provides solutions to the skin problems all over our bodies. In a non-invasive way that requires minimal downtime, this treatment can both help smoothen skin and improve the appearance of cellulite.

Get the long lasting results that the store-bought lotions and moisturizers cannot provide you. For more information on Thermage, contact The Aurora Medical Laser & Vein Centre at 403-358-5818.

Shining Some Light On Saving Your Skin

Just the other day, a friend of mine commented about how much she can’t wait for the summer to arrive. Being a fan of warmer weather myself, I concurred and followed up with a list of ideas for us to implement once the summer finally arrives. Spending time in the great outdoors is something that is certainly more enjoyable when you don’t have to worry so much about bundling up.

But being out in the sun also entails taking some precautionary measures. This seemed to be lost on my friend, as she mentioned her desire to “do as much tanning as possible”. Now, I love the sunshine as much as the next person. But I’m also very aware of the damaging effects that the sun’s UV rays can have on our skin. This didn’t seem to phase my friend as she even went so far as toying with the notion of “avoiding sunscreen”.

Firstly, it should be made clear that sunscreen is something that we should all be applying to our skin before going out into the sun. This is true weather it’s the summer time or not. It doesn’t have to be hot outside for the sun’s UV rays to do their damage to your skin. In fact, even during the winter months when the icy, white snow serves as a trampoline for UV rays to bounce off of, it’s important to lotion up.

Secondly, the act of tanning needs to be recognized as a harmful activity. Sure, it seems fun. And yes, people often get favourable comments about the results of sunbathing. But, in the end, the truth is that tanning simply damages your skin. Ridding it of its moisture, the skin loses elasticity and inevitably will begin to wrinkle due to prolonged exposure to the sun.

In addition, it should go without saying that staying out in the sun without sunscreen is a quick way to get sunburn. You would literally be cooking yourself if you attempted to do this throughout the summer time. Sadly, this has already happened for some people. Take it from someone who has skin that always burns if left unprotected, sun damaged skin really hurts!

It’s a really good thing that there is help for those who have sun damaged skin. Intense Pulsed Light Photorejuvenation, as California’s Cosmetic Laser & Skin Rejuvenation Clinic puts it, is the “gold standard” when it comes to rejuvenating sun damaged skin, rosacea, facial veins, large pores and skin pigmentation issues. And although this treatment utilizes light pulses, it isn’t actually a laser.

It’s actually a bit ironic, isn’t it? While the light emitted from the sun can damage your skin, emitting light using IPL actually helps to correct the damage. Unlike a laser, IPL emits a broad spectrum with each and every pulse. As pointed out by Dr. Stephen Baker on his website, “this procedure emits controlled intense pulses of light to the upper layers of the skin while at the same time delivering beneficial thermal energy to the deeper layers.”

At The Aurora Medical Laser & Vein Centre, a state of the art machine known as the Lumenis One is used for IPL treatments. It is considered one of the most advanced IPL units produced. Treatments are very quick and effective and require no downtime from the patients who receive them. For more information about IPL, contact The Aurora Medical Laser & Vein Centre at 403-358-5818.

Enjoy Your Smoothest Summer Yet

Are you starting to notice a change in the air? Does the sun look just a little bit brighter these days? Okay, maybe it is still a bit cold outside. And, perhaps it is just wishful thinking that summer is just around the corner. But, as we all know, time does fly. And before you know it, the summer months will be here.

In last week’s blog, we discussed the importance of reversing past mistakes via Laser Tattoo Removal. Thankfully, there is a safe and effective way to remove your reminders of the past. When the summer approaches, however, there is another type of removal that comes to mind. Those who truly enjoy the outdoors when the warmer weather arrives, know exactly what I’m talking about.

Laser Hair Removal is an increasingly-popular way to secure that silky smooth feeling. It helps to make waxing, tweezing and shaving all things of the past. Believe it or not, there are still many people who insist on covering up all summer long simply because they can’t bear the pain that comes with these tedious hair removal activities.

Waxing. As Hubpages.com puts it, “When you go in to get waxed, whether facial or body; you always leave with red areas and sometimes bleeding; dependent on where you get waxed. This redness normally doesn’t subside until about an hour or two after the initial waxing.” Not to mention, waxing does not provide permanent results. Another painful appointment will be necessary within weeks.

Tweezing. This is probably the most laborious of all hair removal methods. Plucking away at your unwanted hairs takes forever. And like waxing, it doesn’t take away your hair forever. Hubpages.com points out that it is also near impossible to tweeze the finer hairs, so a completely smooth appearance once you finish tweezing is quite difficult to attain.

Shaving. This, as you may have guessed, is the most popular and common way to remove hair. As a result, you are likely well aware that it can be quite expensive. This method also promotes the fastest growing back of hair. The hair also grows back quite coarse, offering that rough and stubbly look. Don’t forget, razor burn, ingrown hairs and rashes are also quite common due to shaving.

So what to do? Are we all to be sentenced to life long terms of pain and suffering simply because we want smooth and silky skin? Are we all doomed to spend portions of our summer months covered up with clothing instead of enjoying warm weather in shirts, shorts and skirts? Of course not!

The LightSheer™ Hair Laser makes sure of that. It’s a revolutionary treatment that both protects the skin and removes hair permanently. Using a “chill tip”, this laser hair removal treatment also secures patients the ability to remove hair in a pain-free way. Naturally, such a treatment should only be performed by a certified and experienced laser technician.

Enjoy your summer properly! Contact The Aurora Medical Laser & Vein Centre at 403-358-5818 for more information on LightSheer™ Laser Hair Removal today.

Time For A Change With Laser Tattoo Removal

It is not uncommon for people to fear change. There is comfort in the familiar. But change can be good. Just take the snazzy new Aurora Medical Laser & Vein Centre website. Its sleek new design adds yet another exciting development to our ever-growing practice. We hope you’ll take some time to take a look around a peruse through its new features.

Change can be good in other ways too. Sometimes for change to be good, you need to add something new to your life. And other times, good change can come in the form of taking something away. Tattoos, for example, are ways that many people like to express themselves. Elaborate body art often conveys a message of individuality, freedom and self-confidence.

And other times, getting inked up is simply a bad mistake! In fact, according to WebMD.com, as many half of the people who generally get tattoos end up wanting to get Laser Tattoo Removal. And, to be honest, we can’t blame them. Not all tattoos are created equally. Some are downright hideous. But, then again, even the most beautiful looking tattoos can be considered errors in judgment.

Tattoos, it can be argued, are fashion statements. Clothing, of course, is also tied to our sense of style. However, the former is a permanent marking while the latter can be removed and changed on a regular basis. So what happens when our tattoos go out of style? What to do when our fashion statements are no longer the statements we wish to make?

Laser Tattoo Removal, of course, is a growingly-popular solution to this “mistake”. The latest laser technologies safely remove tattoos without permanently damaging the skin. One such laser is known as a “Q-switched laser”. As explained by Natalie Kita on About.com, this laser emits short, high power pulses that produce beams of light.

These pulses break up the ink pigmentation so that they are removed from underneath the first layer of skin. The number of appointments one may need to remove his or her tattoo depends on the type of tattoo. Coloured tattoos require more treatment than black tattoos. Naturally, the size of the tattoo will also play a factor in the number of sessions required.

WedMD.com also notes that the age of the tattoo and even the colour of the patient’s skin will play roles in what removal techniques are used. Of course, the best bet is always to consult with an experienced professional before deciding which method may be right for you. Just know that your permanent marking don’t have to be so permanent after all.

If you’re interested in having your tattoo removed, know that you’re not alone. And there’s certainly no need to fear this type of change. Many people look towards changing their lives significantly knowing that tattoo removal will free them of past mistakes. If you’re one of those people, don’t hesitate to contact The Aurora Medical Laser & Vein Centre at 403-358-5818 for more information on Laser Tattoo Removal.
