Start The New Year Beating Migraines With Botox

On behalf of everyone at Aurora Medical Laser & Vein Centre, we hope you’re having an incredible holiday season! Of course, it’s not over just yet. We’re just a couple of days away from celebrating a new year. But with the all of the excitement, you may be experiencing something that doesn’t help for the holiday season to be all that much fun. At times, it can be a headache.

And we mean that literally! If you suffer from migraine headaches, you are not alone. In fact, Mark Witten of CanadianLiving.com reports that “more than three million women in Canada suffer from migraines, and 92 per cent of them miss work, school or family functions as a result, according to Headache Network Canada, an organization that provides scientific and medical information on the treatment of headache disorders.”

That’s the bad news. The good news is that you don’t have to live with constant migraine headaches. Now you’ve likely heard about Botox and its unique ability to smooth out unwanted wrinkles and facial lines. But did you know that Botox injections have been used for a whole lot more than simply getting rid of the signs of aging? Botox actually battles migraines too!

But how does it help? MigraineTrust.org admits that it’s not a pure science. However, Botox “is believed to inhibit the release of peripheral nociceptive neurotransmitters, which may then have a knock-on effect on the central pain processing systems that generate migraine headaches.” Thankfully, there are numerous patients who have suffered from migraines who can attest to the relief that Botox has given them.

On Drugs.com, one such patient commented on her experience with getting Botox injections for the purpose of relieving her migraine headaches. She admits to having tried several medications to ease her pain prior to getting the injections. Sadly, they brought on side effects that made her very uncomfortable. Acknowledging that, at first, she was apprehensive to give Botox a try, she remarks about how it ended up changing her life.

“At first, I was quite hesitant,” she reveals, “My first set of injections were practically painless. The sensation is similar to plucking eyebrow hairs, but nothing like getting a bikini wax! I’ve continued Botox every 3 months and my headaches are down to maybe 1 per month and they no longer affect my life as a busy mom. Botox has been a miracle for me!”

Can Botox be the miracle that you’re looking for in the new year? If you’ve been suffering from migraines for a long time and nothing seems to be helping, Botox injections may be the solution for you. As always, it is extremely important to consult a licensed and experienced physician with any questions you may have about any treatments and procedures that you are curious about.

This is especially true for Botox, which has, from time to time, received a bad rap due to unlicensed practitioners who have unlawfully administered injections. Contact Aurora Medical Laser & Vein Centre at 403-358-5818 for the facts. Get more information on Botox and learn about how professionally-administered injections can help you with your migraine headaches. Here’s hoping we can help you have your happiest new year yet!

6 Ways To Have Happy And Healthy Holidays

Christmas is just a couple of days away! And you’re likely thinking that with all of the amazing holiday treats that will be available for consumption, you’re bound to pack on a few pounds. Chances are that you’ve been working hard on maintaining a healthy lifestyle all year long. It has got to be okay to indulge just this once, right? Well, there is some truth to that.

After all, the holiday season is meant to be enjoyable. Most people will be taking time off of their regular routines. That means relaxing instead of working. And for some, that means splurging on sweets instead of watching those calories! Celebrating the season, however, doesn’t have to entail eating everything in sight. There are a number of ways to enjoy holiday treats in a guilt-free way.

Nuts. These are bound to be out on the hors d’oeuvres tables this Christmas. And as Peggy J. Noonan of CookingLight.com reminds us, there are numerous health benefits to eating nuts. They contain mono and polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are the types of fats known to be heart-healthy, says Noonan. Nuts also contain protein, fibre, vitamin E, folate, and magnesium.

Olives. Also popular holiday hors d’oeuvres, olives are low in calories and are rich in monounsaturated fats. Noonan also notes that “other compounds may have a cardio-protective effect. Extra-virgin olive oil was found to have higher levels of polyphenols than refined oils, and resulted in greater increases of HDL (‘good’) cholesterol.”

Veggies. Vegetables are bound to make their way on to every “healthy eating” list ever made. And during the holidays, this no exception! You’re bound to encounter veggie platters, however, that include high-calorie dips. As Joy Bauer recommends on her website, “substitute nonfat Greek or traditional yogurt for calorie-laden sour cream or mayonnaise in any of your favorite dip recipes.”

Chocolate. You’re probably surprised to see this tasty treat on the list of healthy holiday snacks. And you’re bound to see a lot of it this holiday season. Here’s the thing – if you do your best to stick to dark chocolate, you will reap the benefits of polyphenols and flavonoids. According to Noonan, they are “two types of antioxidants shown to help prevent damage caused by cholesterol in arteries.”

Red Wine. As much as the holiday season is the time for giving, it’s the time for drinking as well. And while it’s great to feel merry, it’s important never to overindulge. The risks of drinking excess alcohol are vast. However, as Noonan points out, “red wine contains varying amounts of resveratrol, an antioxidant from grape skins that can help reduce blood clotting by decreasing platelet aggregation.”

Cranberry Sauce. Thanksgiving is generally not the only holiday when turkey and cranberry sauce make an appearance. So as Joy Bauer recommends, “enjoy the health benefits of antioxidant-rich cranberries without drowning them in sugar by making a homemade cran-apple sauce with plenty of chopped fresh apples.” Here’s hoping these healthy treats help you have that much more of a very Merry Christmas!

Make ProFractional Your Gift To Yourself!

Christmas is just over one week away! And most people are still searching for that perfect gift for that special someone in their lives. Interestingly, there are a lot of people out there who do have specific gifts on their wish lists that they know won’t appear under their Christmas trees. After all, the fountain of youth is likely much too big to be wrapped up in a box anyways!

There is, however, a fountain of youth that exists – somewhat – that people can offer as a gift to themselves. ProFractional is an innovative laser procedure that works to improve wrinkles, scars and sun damaged skin. Thus, the treatment helps to improve one’s look so that he or she is able to regain more of a youthful appearance. There are many benefits to this fascinating procedure.

Fast Treatments, Short Downtime. ProFractional treatments make use of a laser microbeam. It is able to treat thousands of pinpoint areas on a patient’s skin. Because only a fraction of the skin is directly treated by the laser, it allows for a very quick downtime period. Patients are generally able to return to their normal routines within a day or two.

Treats Many Conditions. ProFractional takes things a step further than your average laser treatment in that it assists patients with numerous issues. It is commonly used to battles signs of aging such as age spots, wrinkles and fine lines. However, it is also an excellent treatment in the aid of post-traumatic scarring, acne scars, sun spots, freckles and sun damaged skin.

But how does ProFractional really work? Remember that “microbeam” we referred to earlier? Its effectiveness comes as a result of its ability to create thousands of microscopic channels in the skin. These channels are surrounded by areas of healthy skin and these untreated zones of skin work to invigorate the body’s natural healing process.

As a result, the areas of the skin that are treated with the ProFractional laser are then able to stimulate the production of new collagen. This plumps up the skin to smooth out wrinkles, fine lines, scars and other skin irregularities. This is how patients are given back their youthful, glowing complexions without the worry for long periods of downtime.

For those who are concerned about the after-effects during the downtime, they should rest assure that it often takes no longer than three days. As mentioned earlier, downtime is very short with ProFractional treatments. Immediately following procedures, patients may experience some swelling or redness, similar to the sensation of getting sunburn. The skin is simply working on its resurfacing process.

Your doctor will likely recommend that you use some form of protection from the sun in the days following the procedure. Of course, it’s always best that you consult a doctor with knowledge and experience before going ahead with any treatment. Contact Aurora Medical Laser & Vein Centre for more information on ProFractional by calling 403-358-5818. It may just be the perfect gift to give to yourself!

Removing Old Hair For The New Year

The holiday season usually guarantees two things. One: people are scurrying through shopping malls looking for gifts for their loved ones. And two: people are beginning to gear up for the new year by selecting their New Year’s resolutions. The concept of “losing” something generally permeates the lists of resolutions that most people make. Losing the habit of smoking and losing weight are two of the most popular examples.

But what about losing your hair? Have you ever heard of such a New Year’s resolution? Most people – if they really thought about it – would love to lose having to shave, tweeze and wax their unwanted hair. What if, in this approaching new year, you could actually make that a reality? Laser hair removal treatments, as you may have guessed, are growing in popularity because of what they help people to lose.

Yes, these treatments help for patients to do away with unwanted hair on various regions of the body. But being able to do away with the painstaking hair removal processes that are generally required to remove that hair is huge added benefit. Many have attested to the effectiveness of laser hair removal treatments and the relative ease that comes along with receiving them.

This is evidenced by an individual who posted in a WeWoman.ca forum as olsen123. “I have tired (of) shaving, waxing and tweezing to remove my unwanted hair,” she writes, “it is so painful as well as it is not permanent solution. (I prefer) laser hair removal treatments which really gave me the best result without any pain.” She goes on to suggest to others in the forum to consult experienced doctors before deciding upon the treatment.

Another individual posting as Sofia Roberts agrees. “There are no such side effects of Laser hair removal if you get it done by an expert doctor and follow their (advice),” she writes, adding that the results mainly depend on factors such hair and skin type, as well as post-treatment skin care. Applying ice to the treated area and keeping out of the sun are two pieces of advice she gives to those completing their treatments.

At Aurora Medical Laser & Vein Centre, the LightSheer Hair Laser is used for the hair removal process. It is both an effective and safe treatment for those who have also grown tired of constant shaving, waxing and tweezing. What makes the LightSheer Hair Laser so revolutionary is its patented “chill tip”. This protects the skin in order to make the procedure virtually painless.

Treatments are only performed by certified experienced laser technicians at the clinic. The WeWoman.ca forum definitely provided sound advice when it included the recommendation to seek out a trained professional for laser hair removal treatments. Doing so will ensure that you are being treated with the utmost care and that you are kept safe throughout each procedure.

“I think there is a big misconception about laser hair removal,” writes Alex Nelson in the same forum, “Many people think it is very painful process. But it is not like that. If you can do it from the right place you can get very impressive results.” Aurora Medical Laser & Vein Centre may just be the right place for you! For more information or to book a consultation, please feel free to call 403-358-5818.

6 Tips For Staying Fit During The Holidays

With December now here, it is safe to say that the holiday season has officially kicked off. True, we’re not technically on holidays yet. But the parties that come along with the season have either already begun or will be taking place in the weeks to come. With that said, it’s quite obvious that keeping ourselves in tip-top shape won’t be so easy. For some, this time of year represents taking a holiday from fitness routines.

That shouldn’t be the case, however. You’ve worked hard to keep yourself fit and healthy. Just because Christmas is around the corner, it doesn’t mean that you should do away with your plans to stay in shape. There are a number of ways to stay fit throughout the holidays. And in today’s blog, we’ll detail some of the most unique ones that we’ve come across.

Brush Your Teeth after Meals. Although this should probably be a part of your normal routine in order to maintain your pearly whites, Military.com suggests this practice as a way to make overeating less appealing. With a nice and clean mouth, you’re less likely to want to eat or drink something extra following your meal. So after dinner, head to the bathroom to brush, floss and use mouthwash.

Eat A Balance Of Macronutrients. Chances are you’ll have many opportunities to chow down throughout the holidays. It will be hard to completely avoid overeating. So, if you can, fill up on as many proteins and veggies as you can instead of sugary or starchy foods. As About.com reports, “protein increases your metabolism by up to 20% and veggies take more calories to digest than what they contain.”

Make Fitness A Family Event. You’re bound to be around a lot of family members this holiday season. Don’t make them an excuse not to workout. Instead, include them in your workouts! AllWomenStalk.com suggests that you “plan a family football game, snowball fight or 5k to keep everyone on your Christmas list fit this holiday season”. You’ll be initiating exercise with the people you love most and creating great memories with them.

Eat Slowly. There will be plenty to eat at each holiday event you attend. You’ll likely want to dig in to all the wonderful treats available. So eat slowly and enjoy the many savoury flavours. According to Military.com, doing so “will allow the ‘hungry- full’ response from your brain to tell you are satisfied. It takes the brain about 20 minutes to let you know you are full.”

Limit Your Alcohol Consumption. Not only are there going to be a ton of tasty eats to choose from, but the drinks are sure to be abound as well. Do your best to limit them or avoid them altogether. Believe it or not, About.com reveals that “you are better off eating an extra cookie than consuming numerous cocktails. Excess alcohol just contributes too much to fat gain.”

Workout From Home. It will be harder to hit the gym during the holidays. That’s why it’s important to make your home your new gym. Find some workouts on DVD or go online to locate ones that you can do in your living room. Suggests AllWomenStalk.com, “fit in workouts between baking and wrapping sessions!…(It’s) a great way to stay fit during the holidays!”
