5 Ways Winter Is Wonderful For Laser Hair Removal

Well, January is almost over. But the cold and snowy winter still has a whole lot of life to it. Depending on who you are, this is either really good or really bad news. Rarely is there ever any in-between. So, for those of you who can’t stand the winter, here’s hoping that the following information can make for the rest of the winter months be bright ones for you.

It’s the perfect time of year for laser hair removal treatments! Now, you may be wondering what the big deal is. You can get your hair removed at any time of year, right? Well, of course you can. But during the winter months, when your skin is predominantly covered from head to toe, you offer your body the ideal opportunity to rid itself of unwanted hair. Want to know why?

Your Skin Is Paler. Laser hair removal works best on pale skin and dark hair. So during the summer time, when your skin gets more sun, you give it less of an opportunity to adequately remove hair using a laser. Think of it this way. You know how it’s a good idea to avoid wearing black on hot summer days? That’s because the darker colour absorbs more heat. This is what makes the lasers used for hair removal so effective!

Less Interruptions. During the winter, you should hopefully have more time to devote to your laser hair removal sessions. The kids are in school so you’re not forced to entertain them on a daily basis. The holidays have just ended so you’re less likely to be planning parties and frantically shopping for gifts. It’s a good time of year to get into a routine that you can stick to.

Ideal Preparation For Bikini Season. Let’s face it. You really want to be smooth for the summer time anyways, right? So why not do your laser hair removal sessions during a season when no one will be privy to your progress? It’s much easier to keep things under wraps – or literally your legs under pants – during the winter. When the summer comes, you should be all set to take to the beach without fear!

It’s Virtually Painless. Okay, so it doesn’t matter if you opt for laser hair removal during the winter or any other time of year – the process is virtually painless. In fact, most patients liken the feeling of getting the treatment to light snapping or pinching. Patients getting the treatment are generally quite calm and comfortable. Now compare that to the agonizing processes of shaving, waxing and tweezing.

It Saves You Money. Speaking of those traditional hair removal practices, consider the costs of shaving cream, razors, wax strips, tweezers and the like. You’re constantly having to replace them, therefore, the whole hair removal process is an ongoing money-draining practice. Once you’ve undergone the appropriate number of laser hair removal sessions, you can do away with buying any of the above mentioned items again.

At Aurora Medical Laser & Vein Centre, the LightSheer™ Hair Laser is used for the laser hair removal process. Using its patented “chill tip”, this laser provides patients with a safe and pain-free method of managing unwanted hair. All treatments at the clinic are performed by certified experienced laser technicians. For more information, or to book a consultation, call 403-358-5818.

Beating And Treating Varicose Veins

If you’re thinking that you’ve already had enough of this winter cold, you’re certainly not alone. If there’s one thing that all Canadians have in common, it’s the experience of harsh winter weather. Not all Canadians hate it, mind you. Many, in fact enjoy the opportunity to get out into the crisp, cold air to enjoy winter sports among many other snow-required activities.

Then again, there are countless people who long for the warm days of summer. And if you’re one of the many of us who experience the appearances of varicose veins in our legs, that group likely includes you. Just a couple of months back, we blogged about the idea that winter is the season of varicose veins. The main reason for this is that most people stay indoors during the colder months.

As a result, they get less exercise. And this lack of exercise is actually a factor that can cause the onset of varicose vein appearance. As Zane Schwarzlose explains on HealthAndStuff.com, a “lack of exercise and a bad diet can contribute to the development of varicose veins. A lack of movement contributes to varicose veins because it forces veins to work harder to pump blood back to the heart.”

So naturally, getting your workouts in and eating with a health-conscious mindset are two ways that you can help to prevent varicose veins. Schwarzlose does note a few other methods that can assist with this cause. Maintaining a healthy weight is key. In addition to regular exercise, you also want to be mindful of the movement your body is making – or not making.

In other words, try not to stand in any one spot for a long period of time. Keeping in motion in an effort to keep your blood circulating is important. As well, Schwarzlose recommends that you stop smoking. Likely to be found on just about any list of health tips, quitting cigarettes will do your entire system wonders. Avoiding tight pants or heels will also assist with blood circulation in the legs.

Finally, Schwarzlose suggests that you “elevate your legs for about 15 minutes a few times per day to help relieve pain if you already suffer from varicose veins. This will also help your veins pump back blood to your heart.” But what happens when none of the above methods work? After all, if varicose veins do decide to make an appearance, there’s not much we can do to avoid them.

We can, however, treat them so that they disappear for good! At Aurora Medical Laser & Vein Centre, we utilize the “gold standard” when it comes to the removal of varicose veins. Known as Sclerotherapy, this treatment makes use of a “sclerosing solution”, not a laser. The solution is injected into what are called “feeder veins” so that they close up and disappear beneath the skin.

The results have proven to be remarkable time after time. Of course, it’s always best to consult an experienced professional about your concern with varicose veins in order to learn more about the treatments that can eliminate them. Please feel free to call Aurora Medical Laser & Vein Centre to have that very important discussion. Simply dial 403-358-5818.

Avoiding The Risk Of Melanoma

Sometimes we take our appearances for granted. In other words, we see ourselves so often in mirrors each day that we get used to the images we see in our reflections. As a result, we may tend to miss particular physical characteristics that we simply pass off as “normal”. Freckles are great examples. I’ve known people with freckles who look puzzled when they are complimented on them.

“I have freckles?” they sometimes reply in surprise. It may sound strange or even impossible, but when you’re so used to seeing yourself each day, you often don’t even realize the various things that make you unique. This isn’t a bad thing, mind you. That is, unless you happen to be missing particular traits about your skin that could pose potential dangers.

Moles are great examples, in this case. Chances are, we all have some moles somewhere on our bodies. And we may barely even notice them because they’ve been there for so long and they haven’t changed in size or colour. This is a good thing. As it is pointed out on WebMD.com, if a mole doesn’t change shape over time, there is very little reason to be concerned.

However, moles are physical characteristics that we all should pay closer attention to. Keeping in mind that “the vast majority of moles are not dangerous”, it is still important to examine your skin with a mirror from time to time to make note of any changes in your moles. Pay attention to their colour, height, size and shape to see if there are any differences over time.

In addition, if you have moles that bleed, ooze, itch or are tender or painful, that may be a cause for concern. In such cases, it’s important to consult a dermatologist. As well, if you have any moles that have recently developed after the age of 30, this is also something you will want to look into. The reason, of course, is to protect yourself from the possible development of melanoma.

According to SkinCancer.org, melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. It is most often found in growths that develop by ultraviolet radiation from the sun or tanning beds. As the site describes it, “Melanomas often resemble moles; some develop from moles. The majority of melanomas are black or brown, but they can also be skin-colored, pink, red, purple, blue or white.”

This may all sound like scary stuff. But the truth is that melanoma can be treated and cured, especially if it is recognized early. At Aurora Medical Laser & Vein Centre, the VariLite laser is used for the removal of moles. This treatment is well known for providing excellent results while leaving no bruising and requiring virtually no down time.

In addition to the removal of moles, the VariLite laser is also fantastic at removing small red blood vessels on the face (known as telangiectasia), skin tags and other pigmented skin spots. The chances that your moles are life-threatening are very slim. But it’s important to keep an eye on them nonetheless. For more information or for a consultation, please call 403-358-5818.

Tattoo Removal For A New Look In The New Year

Happy new year everyone! Here’s hoping your 2014 has gotten off to an amazing start. With the holidays now behind us, you’re likely thinking one thing – you wish you were still on holiday! No matter how long you have to celebrate the holiday season, it never seems like enough time, does it? There is, however, a whole lot to celebrate once the holidays come to a close.

For most people, a new year signifies a new beginning. Many make New Year’s resolutions, of course, and many others look to delve further into the plans that they put in place a year earlier. The start of a new year also often represents a time for change. To set things in motion for a fresh start, people often cut their hair, change their wardrobe or remove their tattoos.

That’s right. We said, remove their tattoos. Believe it or not, the removal of tattoos has become nearly as popular a practice as getting the tattoos themselves. There are tons of reasons to have them removed and the start of a new year is an excellent one. Perhaps, it’s time for that change. After all, many people who choose to remove their tattoos do so because they recognize that they have matured.

Many people get tattoos at young ages. Unfortunately, that means that they got those tattoos when they were a lot more impressionable and lot less mature. So in their older years, people wish to change their look by no longer having those reminders of their younger, “sillier” years. In other cases, a new job opportunity is the reason for the tattoo removal.

Many working environments frown on the idea of having tattoos in places that are visible to the public. In other words, if they can’t be covered up by sleeves and slacks, they may not be appropriate in certain industries. The “professional look”, as you can imagine, is one that doesn’t involve body art. That’s not to say that the body art doesn’t look good. It just doesn’t fit the gig.

Do you have a tattoo that you’ve been thinking about removing? No matter the reason for your impending decision, the beginning of 2014 is as good a time as any for you to consider laser tattoo removal. At Aurora Medical Laser & Vein Centre, the most advanced tattoo removal technology is used. To ensure the safe and effective removal of tattoos, Q-switched Nd: YAG lasers using PhotoAcoustic Technology are utilized.

These lasers safely penetrate the skin and target each tattoo ink color with specific wavelengths. This causes the tattoos to fade out over time, generally taking between five and fifteen sessions to achieve complete removal. The most advanced laser used at Aurora Medical Laser & Vein Centre is known as the RevLite. It is excellent in the removal of both black and pesky multi-coloured tattoos.

Instead of two wavelengths (generally employed by the average laser), the RevLite uses four wavelengths. What this means is that it’s able to target a wide range of colours. This is important as some colours such as green and sky blue are often harder to remove than others.
