6 Ways To Ward Off Wrinkles And Fine Lines

Skin protection is a common topic of discussion during the warmer months of the year. Although the sun comes out all year round, we tend to think that our skin needs extra protection just because it can get hot outside during the summer. Let it be known that as long as there is a sun in the sky, there is a reason to protect our skin. And those that are mindful of the ways to protect their skin stand the best chance of warding off the signs of aging.

It is true that, with the passing of time, wrinkles and fine lines become inevitable. However, there are a number of ways that we can work to minimize them. As mentioned, sun exposure is a major factor in the wrinkling of our skin. Therefore, avoiding getting too much sun and wearing sunscreen when you are in the sun are two key methods of maintaining a youthful look. But there is more you can do to help keep the signs of aging at bay.

Here are six ways to ward off wrinkles and fine lines:

1. Drink that water! It may sound a bit strange, but think of your skin like a plant. Without water, it will dry up! Maintaining a healthy diet than incorporates constant hydration is a great way to keep your skin looking smooth and wrinkle-free. “Drink plenty of water to keep your skin cells hydrated and cleansed,” advises Tony Isaacs of NaturalNews.com, “Good, pure water helps keep our cells hydrated and cleansed to avoid health robbing toxic buildup.”

2. Eat nutritiously. Speaking of maintaining a healthy diet, it’s important to treat your body to generous servings of fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. According to Linda Foster of The Huffington Post, an “anti-aging diet” not only includes a lot of water, fruits and veggies but fish as well. “Eat fresh caught Atlantic salmon three times a week or another fish high in omega 3 fatty acids, such as herring, mackerel, trout, or tuna,” she recommends.

3. Spread bananas on your face. Okay, if you’ve let out a bit of laugh reading this tip, then you’re not alone. As funny as it sounds, it’s a legitimate recommendation from Isaacs, who believes in natural remedies. “Bananas are wonderful as an anti-wrinkle treatment,” he informs us, “Mash 1/4 banana until very creamy in consistency. Spread all over face and leave for 15-20 minutes before rinsing off with warm water followed by a dash of cold. Gently pat dry.”

4. Quit smoking. If tip #3 sounds a bit too strange for you, here is one that is just about impossible to argue. Cigarettes have literally no value when it comes to health. And that includes skin care. “Smoking takes away oxygen and nutrients, and it also increases the number of free radicals in your body’s cells, a main cause of skin aging,” writes Foster. If you’re a smoker, your chances of getting wrinkles significantly increase. And oh yeah, there’s that cancer thing too.

5. Don’t stress. It’s probably a lot easier said than done. But the more you stress yourself out, the higher your chances are of developing the signs of aging. It’s not just the look of worry and frowning that can invite fine lines to remain on your face. There’s a biological reason that stress leads to wrinkles. “When you’re stressed out, your body releases a powerful aging hormone, cortisol, into your blood stream,” says Foster.

6. Get Botox injections. Botox treatments are actually among the most common cosmetic procedures in North America! Millions of people have smoothed away their unwanted facial lines with this proven and safe treatment. Aurora Medical Laser & Vein Centre proudly offers Botox treatments to those who are looking to battle the signs of aging. For more information, please don’t hesitate to call us at 403-358-5818.

Sclerotherapy Is Your Summertime Spider Vein Solution

While spring is an enjoyable time of year, it is often just seen as a prelude to the summertime. In other words, it’s just the warm up (pun intended) to the time of year when the days are at their warmest and the sun is at its brightest. And while most of us love this time of year, there are also those of us who dread summer. And it’s for a reason that you may not necessarily guess on your first try. Spider veins are a cause for many people to want short summers.

Having to wear long pants on the hottest days of the year is no fun. But many women consider the varicose and spider veins that appear in their legs to be so unsightly that they’d rather risk the unbearable heat versus the embarrassment. This isn’t exactly fair, is it? Thankfully, there is a solution that can save your summer! It’s known as sclerotherapy. And the Aurora Medical Laser & Vein Centre is proud to offer it.

Readers of our blog are likely aware that we refer to sclerotherapy as the “gold standard” when it comes to eliminating large spider veins and smaller varicose veins in the legs. Largely preferred over laser treatments, this treatment makes use of a sclerosing solution that is injected to close the “feeder veins” under the skin that cause spider veins to form. Patients’ legs are then compressed with either stockings or bandages for about two weeks and they are encouraged to do a lot of walking to promote blood circulation.

But you don’t just have to take our word for it. Sclerotherapy is widely heralded as a top choice solution for varicose and spider veins by physicians and skin care professionals all over the globe. In fact, some of the world’s most popular celebrity doctors have recommended sclerotherapy. On EmaxHealth.com, Tim Boyer writes that Dr. Oz has notably discussed this procedure on his show.

“Too many of you are hiding behind long pants and skirts because you are ashamed of your varicose and spider veins, but that is going to stop today,” he quotes Dr. Oz as saying at the beginning of his program. One of his guests, Dr. Neil Sadick describes what he feels is the optimum solution to the spider vein problem. The dermatologist and former president of the American College of Phlebology highlights the benefits of sclerotherapy.

“Painless sclerotherapy can be applied via a needle to varicose veins and spider veins that will remove them permanently from the legs,” Boyer relays through Dr. Sadick’s expertise, “Sclerotherapy is a specialized dermatological procedure that involves using a very fine needle to inject a substance directly into the vein that irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to eventually turn into scar tissue that fades away over time.”

The same sentiments are communicated on Oprah.com. Yes, that Oprah! “When a vein is large enough to be threaded with a small needle, sclerotherapy is the most effective option,” reads the website, “A solution is injected into individual veins to irritate and collapse them; the body then reabsorbs them over the following weeks.” Still not convinced that sclerotherapy is your summertime spider vein solution?

We encourage you to call the Aurora Medical Laser & Vein Centre at 403-358-5818 for more information. This summer doesn’t have to be one where you choose to cover up. Feel the freedom of wearing shorts, skirts and swimsuits at your leisure without the fear of exposing your varicose and spider veins. The experts agree that when it comes to these unsightly veins, sclerotherapy is a proven solution!

6 Helpful Tips To Help You Spring Into Better Shape

With spring now in full swing, there are a lot less reasons to put off those outdoor workouts. Of course, it’s always important to make time for your health and fitness routines. But during the wintertime, you can be excused for missing a day or two considering the off-putting outdoor conditions. Well those excuses are no longer valid when the weather is warm and the sun is shining. It’s time to spring into better shape!

For most of us, that’s easier said than done. You’ll first need to find the time to workout, which really comes down to being dedicated. If you have particular weight loss or fitness goals, it’s up to you to schedule your workouts so that you’re not falling short of your objectives. It’s all about your mindset. If you can visualize your desired outcome, you’ll be more likely to achieve it. But that doesn’t mean you won’t need some help along the way!

Here are six helpful tips to help you spring into better shape:

1. Ditch all the packaged snack foods. The first step to enjoying a new weight loss-inducing workout routine is to get a lot more diligent about what you eat. And that means eliminating all of that processed junk food. On Bodybuilding.com, Shannon Clark insists that attaining a “bikini body” means avoiding frozen dinner meals, ice cream and even fruit-flavoured yogurt. It should go without saying that chips, pretzels, sugary cereals and white bread need to go too.

2. Meet with your doctor. Planning out an effective exercise regimen for the spring is an excellent idea. But you want to make sure that your body is cut out for it. Shape.com reminds us that visiting your doctor is a very important step in the process. You’ll want to check for your blood pressure and cholesterol levels and determine if you have any vitamin deficiencies before designing your workout program, says the site.

3. Get good sleep. You’ll notice that these fitness tips haven’t yet included any specific exercise recommendations. Getting into better shape entails certain lifestyle changes. And in addition to eating right and checking in on your current state of health, getting enough sleep is essential. “People who don’t sleep enough are at a higher risk of accumulating body fat,” writes Clark, “Furthermore, it’s likely that your lack of sleep won’t help you fight the craving for a late-night snack run.”

4. Get a partner in crime. Do you have a friend who has similar fitness goals as you do? Having added motivation to workout can be a great way to stay on course with your objectives. Shape.com recommends that you team up with someone who is looking to getting into better shape as well. “Your best bet: Get together at the same time four days a week, whether it’s before work or just before dinner,” recommends the site.

5. Focus on intensive cardio. Many people fall into the trap of believing that a half-hour jog on a treadmill will help to burn fat. This is a misconception. “Instead, add short, super-intense sessions of cardio to your regimen,” advises Clark, “Alternate 30 seconds of intense work with 60 seconds of reduced work and repeat the sequence 8-10 times. You can do interval training anywhere-on a treadmill, on a bike, on the elliptical, or on a rowing machine. Mix it up!”

6. Protect your skin. A lot of your workouts are likely to take place outdoors now that the weather is warming up. But what’s the point of getting in better shape if you’re only damaging your skin in the process? Achieving optimum health includes taking measures to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. “Rub waterproof lotion with at least SPF 15 or more over all exposed areas of your body,” insists Shape.com.

3 Reasons To Give Laser Hair Removal A Try

Are you getting tired of shaving, waxing and tweezing your unwanted hair? To be honest, we’re quite aware of the rhetorical nature of that question. After all, who enjoys any of those hair removal methods? Between the bumps, rashes, nicks, scratches and ingrown hairs, it’s a wonder that any of us bother with shaving, waxing and tweezing! Nevertheless, they remain among the most popular ways for us to remove unwanted hair.

There is a way, of course, to do away with having to perform these tedious and painful hair removal practices. At Aurora Medical Laser & Vein Centre, we offer laser hair removal via the amazingly effective Light Sheer™ Hair Laser. Using its patented “chill tip”, it offers our clients a virtually painless end to unwanted hair. The laser is well known for providing excellent long-term and often permanent hair removal. Here are three reasons why you may want to give it a try.

1. It removes hair with precision. How often have you “missed spots” when trying to shave those hard-to-reach areas of your body? As WebMD.com points out, laser hair removal provides a precise method of eliminating hair from areas where you don’t want it to grow. “Lasers can selectively target dark, coarse hairs while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged,” says the website, referring to the fact that the laser damages hair follicles, impeding their ability to produce hair again.

Precision, in fact, is perhaps the most significant difference between the laser and other hair removal methods. Pinpoint accuracy allows for the procedure to target areas that need to be treated in order to minimize negative reactions from the skin. “A concentrated beam of light (the laser) is aimed at the hair follicle,” explains SkinSpirit.com, “The laser than converts its energy into heat, heats up the hair follicle and prevents that follicle from growing any further.”

2. It removes hair quickly. One of the worst things about shaving, waxing and tweezing is the long time it takes to complete each task. WebMD.com reveals that laser hair removal covers a lot of ground quickly. “Each pulse of the laser takes a fraction of a second and can treat many hairs at the same time,” notes the site, “The laser can treat an area approximately the size of a quarter every second. Small areas such as the upper lip can be treated in less than a minute, and large areas, such as the back or legs, may take up to an hour.”

Naturally, this helps for patients to save themselves quite a bit of time. “Laser hair removal removes hair at the speed of light, literally,” reports SkinSpirit.com, “The laser is designed to treat several hairs in a large surface area, all at the same time. Depending on the area being treated, laser hair removal services can take anywhere from one minute, 15 minutes to a half hour for larger body areas. There’s no downtime after the service. There’s no sticky residue left behind.”

3. It provides a permanent solution. While SkinSpirit.com makes clear that laser hair removal can only guarantee a reduction in body hair, WebMD.com notes that “most patients have permanent hair loss after an average of three to seven sessions.” This is the experience of the majority of people who have given laser hair removal a try. No longer are they shaving, waxing and tweezing – saving them a great deal of time, money and frustration.

“Laser hair removal has been proven to be extremely effective,” SkinSpirit.com informs us, “Hair removal lasers have been in use since 1997 and have been approved for ‘permanent hair reduction’ in the United States by the FDA. According to the FDA, ‘permanent hair reduction’ is defined as being the long-term, stable reduction in the number of hairs regrowing after a treatment regime.”
