Paying The Price For Our Everyday Hair Removal Techniques

We, ladies, pay quite the price to keep ourselves silky and smooth, don’t we? Not only do our everyday hair removal techniques literally cost us a lot of money (all of those razors, shaving creams, wax strips, hair removal creams and salon appointments really add up!), but each of our chosen methods of removing unwanted hair generally come with a long list of side effects.

Shaving.

Most people select this quick and easy hair removal method, making it the most popular of them all. The problems with shaving are the many skin irritations that it often leaves behind. The side effects of shaving, as many of us know, include, but are not limited to ingrown hairs, razor bumps, razor burn, rashes, nicks, cuts and scratches. What is left behind after a shave is often worse than the unwanted hair itself!

This is especially true if you use the same razor over and over again. “If you forget to change out the blades, dull or rusty metal may cause irritation or infection,” informs Jenny Sugar on PopSugar.com, “Shaving can also cause folliculitis, an infection in the hair follicle usually caused by the bacteria Staphylococcus (staph) or a fungus.”

Waxing.

For most of us, waxing is synonymous with the word “ouch”. Simply put, pain is the most obvious and inevitable ramification of selecting waxing as a hair removal method. Layering hot wax on our skin may sound like a crazy idea – and perhaps, that’s because it is! When wax strips are applied to the wax and then literally ripped off of our skin, it pulls hairs directly from their roots. Needless to say, it is extremely painful.

You will especially pay the price if you wax your upper lip – a pretty common practice among women. As KnowFacts.org points out, the side effects of lip waxing include intense pain, increased chances or being prone to ingrown hairs, the formation of red bumps (especially in people with increased lip sensitivity) and minor bleeding. Not a pretty picture, is it?

Threading.

This is a hair removal method that is most commonly used on the face – particularly the eyebrows. As Sugar explains, “a thin piece of thread is twisted and rolled along your skin’s surface, entwining the hairs in the thread and quickly lifting them from the root. There is no use of harmful products, just thread, so it’s a natural way to get rid of unwanted hair.”

However, while she points out that the skin is not at risk for peeling or burning, threading is not a pain-free hair removal method. Much like tweezing, the yanking of hairs can produce some extreme discomfort. Not to mention, side effects of threading include redness, puffiness and ingrown hairs.

At the Aurora Medical Laser & Vein Centre, we offer a solution to all of the above mentioned side effects of our everyday hair removal techniques.
