3 Important Reasons To Use Sunscreen All Summer Long

We recognize that the official start of summer takes place in just over a week’s time. For most Canadians, summer is a synonym for “sunscreen season”. And while we will always herald the use of sunscreen during the summer, it’s important to note that sunscreen use should not be limited to a summer-based activity. It’s necessary all year long!

However, understanding that the summertime is when the vast majority of us expose most of our skin to the sun, it cannot be stressed enough that sunscreen application is an absolute must. In case you may be unaware or have forgotten just how vital it is, allow us to inform/remind you of some important reasons to use sunscreen all summer long.

Here are three:

1. It helps to prevent premature signs of aging.

There are many factors that go into how old a person looks. And his/her age is only one of them. If you’re a smoker, you’re likely to develop wrinkles around your lips. If you’re regularly stressed out, you’re likely to lose a lot of sleep and develop bags under your eyes. And if you stay out in the sun without applying sunscreen, you’re prone to developing fine lines and wrinkles much earlier in life.

“All of us love to have younger looking, radiant, and healthy skin,” writes Nithya Shrikant on Stylecraze.com, “And, this is one of the most convincing reasons to start using sunscreen. It shields your skin from developing signs of aging, such as wrinkles and fine lines. Studies reveal that people below the age of 55 who used sunscreen had 24% lesser chances of developing these aging signs than non-sunscreen and occasional sunscreen users.”

2. It keeps your skin tone even.

What happens when people go out in the sun and expose their faces, necks and arms to the sun’s harmful UV rays without sunscreen? They get sunburned, leaving parts of their bodies with painful, reddish hues, while the rest of their bodies remain their natural skin tones. Not to mention, sunscreen prevents facial brown spots and skin discolouration.

3. It lowers your risk of developing skin cancer.

We’d be hard pressed to find a reason to use sunscreen that is more important than this one. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, “it is estimated that: 206,200 new cancer diagnoses and 80,800 deaths from cancer occurred in Canada in 2017. Lung, colorectal, breast, and prostate cancer accounted for about half of all cancer diagnoses and deaths. About 1 in 2 Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetimes and 1 in 4 will die of the disease.”

When you use sunscreen daily in order to shield your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays, you significantly lower the risk of various types of skin cancer, especially, melanoma. “This is the worst type of skin cancers, which can be life threatening for women, particularly those who are in their 20s,” notes Shrikant.
