What Is The Difference Between Physical And Chemical Sunscreen?

Welcome to June! For many Canadians, this is considered a favourite month. Students, for example, know that it’s the last month of school and that summer vacation is imminent. For everyone else who isn’t in school, the forthcoming stretch of warm and sunny days is enough to keep smiles on faces all day long. The summer season officially gets underway on June 21st. But most people aren’t likely to wait to enjoy the sunshine.

The only problem with “enjoying” sunshine is the common practice exposing our skin to the sun’s harmful UV rays. Far too many individuals do so without the assistance of sunscreen – a necessity if you want to avoid sun damage and the possible onset of deadly skin cancers like melanoma. Please note, however, that not all sunscreens are the same. For example, do you know the differences between physical and chemical sunscreens?

What is chemical sunscreen?

Chemical sunscreen is the type that absorbs directly into the skin in order to absorb the sun’s UV rays. It protects the skin by converting the rays into heat and then releasing them from the body. Chemical sunscreens are described as such because they contain such chemicals as avobenzone, octinoxate and oxybenzone.

Dermatologists generally recommend chemical sunscreens to individuals who plan on doing a lot of swimming and therefore, require water-resistant formulas. Those who play sports and/or sweat quite a bit are also often advised to use chemical sunscreens.

What is physical sunscreen?

Physical sunscreen doesn’t absorb directly into the skin. Instead, it sits on top of the skin in order to reflect the sun’s UV rays. The main active ingredients in physical sunscreens are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.

Most dermatologists agree that physical sunscreen is less irritating to the skin. This is important for those who have sensitive skin. It also happens to have more moisturizing qualities. Because it doesn’t fully blend into the skin, physical sunscreen tends to feel thicker and heavier than chemical sunscreen.
